Homeowners often call asking for a "tune-up" when the furnace has an active fault — or a "repair" when the system just needs its annual service. Booking the right visit saves you money and gets heat back faster.

What is a tune-up, exactly?

A tune-up is preventive: combustion check, heat-exchanger inspection, burner and flame-sensor cleaning, filter and airflow check, and safety-control testing. It is scheduled while the furnace still works. Our article on annual furnace inspections covers what a thorough visit includes.

When do you need a repair instead?

Book a repair — not a tune-up — when there is an active symptom:

The failure mode to avoid

Skipping maintenance until something breaks converts cheap prevention into expensive emergency work — and lets safety issues like heat-exchanger cracks go unnoticed. The reverse failure exists too: paying for repeated "tune-ups" on a furnace with a real underlying fault that never gets diagnosed. If the same symptom returns after service, ask for a written diagnostic, not another cleaning.
