Do You Need Whole-Home Air Purification? An Evaluation Checklist
Wildfire smoke, allergies, and Central Valley dust push many Northern California homes toward IAQ upgrades. Here's how to evaluate what you actually need — and what to skip.

Indoor air quality upgrades range from a better filter to whole-home purification and ventilation. The right answer depends on your symptoms, your home, and your system — not on whatever a salesperson has in the truck.
What counts as an IAQ problem?
Persistent dust buildup, allergy flare-ups indoors, lingering odors, humidity swings, and smoke intrusion during fire season are the signals worth acting on. For the basics, start with how to improve your home's indoor air quality.
Match the solution to the symptom
- Dust and allergens — upgraded media filtration at the air handler usually delivers the biggest gain per dollar.
- Odors and smoke — activated-carbon stages and tighter home sealing matter more than filtration alone.
- Mold concerns — moisture control comes first; purification second. Our article does an AC kill mold? explains what your cooling system can and can't do.
- Stuffy, stale rooms — the issue is often ventilation or airflow balance, not purification.
The failure modes to avoid
Two common ones: buying a high-MERV filter your blower can't push air through (which raises energy use and starves airflow), and installing a purifier while an underlying duct leak keeps pulling attic dust into the system. Evaluate the system as a whole before adding devices to it.
Our approach
Rendon Heating & Air evaluates IAQ as part of the HVAC system, not as an add-on sale. David Rendon's UA Local 342 journeyman training (CA license #1047288) covers airflow and system diagnostics — so recommendations start from measurements, with upfront pricing before any work.
Next step
If any of the symptoms above sound familiar, book an assessment through our indoor air quality service, or bundle it with seasonal maintenance so the whole system gets checked in one visit.
